We built the site on a coldfusion platform where there was a template that took product id passes from url:

product_template.cfm?product_id=100

We had a hard time to get all the pages indexed fo a long time.

Then we have implemented some cool stuff to convert the QS in to something like:

product_template.cfm/product_id/100.cfm

Pages got indexed almost at once.

Now since pages are the same as far as content is considered as duplicate content that we could be getting penalized for?

If it is what would be the way to fix that, i don’t mean programming.

Thanks

If its converted ,the originals are probably no longer in your directory, that would be the only concern...
...i think.

So it created another set of files and a new directory and kept the old ones, but the old ones dont get spidered so maybe it wont trigger any flags. Seems like a good question wether thats duplicate content, i'm not familiar with data base driven sites or cold fusion so hopefully someone whos used similar converters will see this post.

it doesn't matter. it just means that you're pages won't show up twice in the index.

Wait for 9+ months till you are out of the sandbox...

Are your pages indexed by Google and showing as dup' content? I.E. are they just listed as titles?

If you are really concerned do a 301 redirect from the old url to the new one.

Actually, I did some digging on the past notes for the site redesign.

the page was called at first:

page_detail.cfm?id=100

then there was a change

page_detail.cfm/id/100.cfm

then to get some keywords into url we did

page_detail.cfm/id/100/widget-name.cfm

that had same content and was showing up somewhat.

then the new content was written all those pages

keyword1 as the same for every product detail page

keyword1_page.cfm?id=100

then

keyword1_page.cfm/newid/100.cfm and 301 redirect from

if there was id=100

page_detail.cfm?id=100 and page_detail.cfm/id/100.cfm

at this time : newid = 100 has 2 views:

keyword1_page.cfm/newid/100.cfm product picture and copy

and

keyword1_page.cfm/newid/100/big_vew.cfm - has widget picture, large images of the widget and copy(same as above)

the site has been up for 21 month so far. for the past 12 month all pages had PR0 as well as a home page. first product catalog had PR2. After the 1st of Jan we got a gift from Google. HomePage as well as all the first level pages went up to PR3 about 20 of keyword1_page.cfm/newid/100.cfm detail pages got PR3.

before the 1st of Jan. keyword1-widgets was at position 478 on Google. I checked today it is below 700.

MSN gave us a break 2 days ago we have position of #1 #2 or #3 for all the keywords pointing to the homepage

we are listed in MS Small Business and Yahoo directories as well as keyword reach text links form other dir and have about 20 link partners with PR of mostly 4 on the pages where we are linked from. all relevant content sites.

I just don’t know, waiting patiently for the backlink updates and Updates but nothing happens to Google Rankings for the keywords.

Well if some one has an idea what is going on in this case please let me know.

I am going to post the url of the site in a user profile.

I think best thing to do is settle on a page naming structure, get some links and not fret too much about serps until they have settled.
