Flash links followed as easily by bots?

Or better to use .gif or .jpeg?

We'd like to create a map for our home page which will then send visitors off to our websites for different countries. The map would look most impressive in flash, but I was wondering if there was in harm in doing this in terms for the search engines? If there is, we could just make the map as a .gif file.

Do the bots sometimes have difficulty following links in flash files? Or does it make no difference whatsoever?

Thanks very much :)
