Blogging - a quick way to move up the ranks

Can anyone tell me if it's true that linking to your website from big blog sites will make you move up the rankings fast? ie. my keyword I'm optimizing is "green widget" and I link to my site using "green widget" as the link text to my site.... Does this work? I've heard it does?

yes, of course those keyword-links will help you.
no, links from blogs are not better than links from "normal" sites - why should they?

Because you can "optimize" you blog posting, which gives you a more powerful/related link than some other website that will link to you. That's my thinking....

you can optimize "normal" pages just as well.
google likes blogs because they are well linked and regularly updated.
you can do this without a blog, too, if you want to.

I was also thinking, every blog, is truly a new site (different site), that helps doesn't it?
