Hello all....I've been reading the forums and seen countless post extolling the virtue of baclinks w/r to getting a high search rank.....it seems logical...except in searching our main keyword...3 of top 5 listings have Zero links! Am i missing something?

I have a older site that consistently ranks in the top ten for the desired keywords, and there's only a couple of incoming links.
From reading all the posts here on WW, I think the backlinks are more beneficial to new sites.
