Hi everyone.

I am trying to gain some traffic and build up my organic searches. Currently we are using PPC with overture but we want to build up our traffic through organic searches.

I have been browsing this forum for a while today trying to find the best practices and where to go to get started. I have added our my site to a few search engines and directories. I have read a few posts on how to get a good ranking with google, but it talks about taking a year. I am looking for a quicker way to gain traffic, without having to pay an arm and a leg.

How should I gain links? I have added my site to Yahoo! and DMOZ but even that will take a while to get listed. What programs does everyone here suggest for paying for traffic. There are many companies out there and I am not sure exactly where to go.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks :)

there's no such thing as gaining fast and organic searches. Not anymore anyway. No one would wait a year if it was possible to get traffic faster.

Yeah I can understand that, it was worth a shot though ;).

What about paying for directories. Like I have heard ups and downs about paying to get into Yahoo!. Should I pay to get listed in their directory? Also, I am hesitant about how often I should submit to Yahoo! and DMOZ, I have already added myself to those directories, but just my main root www.mysite.com. How many pages could I stick up at once? Or would adding more than 1 consider me spam. Reason I ask this is because my site could belong to several of the directories listed. Could I add my site to all those directories at one time and not be considered spam?

Thanks for the reply :)

The fastest way to get traffic is to get noticed (googlenews/slashdot etc) or to get lots of incoming links fast, as discussed below

you could look at doing some link exchanges and submitting into more directories..maybe do a simple search on google for "Add URL [keyword]" (PS i got that from Mack's great post)..and you'll find alot of directories to list in as well as people who will do link exchanges.

Get press coverage by getting sued or arrested by something big. LOL

I've had so much spam (people putting a link to their site in guestbooks) that I've had to institute massive filters to the point where hardly anything isn't "deleted"
in the posts--the email and URL and a long list of words that are deleted. I've been discuraging clients from putting up guestbooks for that very reason as it takes the webmaster massive time to delete bogus posts not related to the actual site. And Google, et. al will probably eventually discount those links anyway.

That is not true. I put up a site 2 weeks ago and get 1000 visitors a day now. The trick is to buy a site that already has the PR and backlinks.

There is no cheap way to do it unless you know how to do it. Thats like saying how do I get to play in the NBA in less than a month. This is the big league now. G has made it harder to do. Keep reading WW.

The previous posts are correct. Achieving good search engine placement organically is not done overnight. I recomend following these steps to get your site optimized for rankings.

First: Keyword identification and original keyword rich content. I am assuming you will add alt text, header tags, title tag, internal text links, etc.

Once you have optimized your website then you can should submit to dmoz (which you did). Then I would search the web for products/services similar to what you are offering but not your competition and ask if they'll link to you. Try to find websites that don't require a reciprocal link from you. They two really just cancel each other out.

I would not recomend paying for inclusion in Yahoo, MSN,etc. I just think its a waste because they will pick your website up anyway. If you sell products, you could submit to Froggle for FREE. It usually doesn't take them too long to show your listings.

The only way to really see results instantly is to use PPC like Google, Overture, etc. The other thing I would suggest is advertising on websites with similar intrests. Some of them are very affordable and it would be targeted traffic.

Don't ever stop updating your site and making it more comprehensive. Always keep looking for links. Your work should never be done.
