I'm new to this and I really need help. I have a customer who is hounding me and asking me why his site has not shown up on the search engines. I've been inserting them manually. I am not sure how I should respond to his concerns?

Any help/suggestions?

Thanks.

In general you will find that using the search engines' "add URL" function very ineffective.

The only sure way to get sites listed in the search engines is links, lots and lots of links.

Apply to have it listed in the appropriate part of DMOZ, pay to have it listed in Yahoo, link to it from your design site, etc etc etc.

How long has it been? Get a listing in the Yahoo! directory for $300 per year. You will get spidered by Y! and Google within 7-10 days. Get on DMOZ, get a press release out there, and work on building link popularity. Basically, start reading posts about the topic and you'll get there.

So basically this guys best bet, is to pay to get listed? His site has been up for four months and he says he doesn't see his site listed anywhere. I do not know what to do. :(

Paying to be in Yahoo is a short cut. Some categories get a lot of referrals from Yahoo Directory (especially uncrowded directory listings).

You should probably spend some time reading the link development forum [webmasterworld.com] for ideas on how to get links to sites.

Don't forget to submit to as many directories as you can also. Most are free or of minimal cost and the links will start to add up pretty quickly.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, this isn't 1998 anymore and you have to pay to get the results you want ... especially with all the competition.
