Best way to link internal pages - a tutorial?

Can anyone recommend a good overview or tutorial on the different ways to setup a site, with pros and cons of each?

What I'm trying to do is drive as much traffic as possible to just the homepage. Can I have a directory such as /articles/ where I have all my content, with each page interlinked with the rest, but not having links to these articles on the homepage?

I'd like to use these pages to eventually get ranked in the search engines and use them to drive traffic to the homepage, but without having to link to them from the homepage.

I guess I could have a tiny link to Site Map at the bottom of the home page, and have all pages linked to from there. Would that be the best way to do it?
