looking for suggestions on getting useful traffic quickly

i've been lurking here for the last several weeks and, although i've picked up a number of good ideas relating to this project, i haven't found any discussions specifically addressing this issue with these constraints, so...

(if you can post links to existing threads that address these issues, i'd be grateful.)

i'm getting ready to launch a site to market a service.

the keywords/phrases that i've come up with so far seem to be highly competitive (based on the trial version of a well-known service that's apparently off-limits to name directly, the best of them have a KEI in the single digits. i plan on buying some time on the full version of that service to get a better handle on this, but my gut says that the full version will give me about the same results - although i'm hoping it will help me find alternative key words/phrases with better KEIs that i haven't thought of - or had suggested by people i've asked).

i also have a low budget; less than USD $1000 (probably more like USD $500).

i'd appreciate any suggestions as to how i might approach getting useful traffic to this site quickly, given these constraints.

If you are looking for useful traffic quickly, the keywords are competitive, and you don't have a big budget, you are going to have some problems. You say you have a site that markets a service. I don't know exactly what this is, so I don't know what your options are. However, your best bet is some sort of press release along with news links/articles on major sites of your targetted demographic. It takes a bit (or a lot) of luck and skill, but thats the fastest way to do it without money.
