SEO - unique content

How long will it be unique?

One of the main factors that appear to be emerging re good SE rankings is unique content. So I sit and write pages of good stuff, great. But along comes a few not-so-honest souls and copy/paste it onto their sites. Now SE ignores my content because it's not unique. What to do?

Contact the site owners and ask them to remove the content.

How do you know this?

Why couldn't it be any one of 10,000 other reasons why a SE is not giving you a favorable ranking?

Sometimes when searching a topic, I'll find the same article on several sites. So how can you be sure that you're being penalized because your site's content can be found elsewhere?
