Themed Web Sites

can individual web pages be optimized differently?

I figured I would stop by and see how you all felt about Themed web sites.

I understand that it is common practice to have a web site that is themed towards a paticular topic. Health, Business, Sports etc...

My question is, is there really a difference to the Search Engine rankings if a site is themed on one paticular topic, or can we as web masters literally optimize each individual page for a different audience?

Reason I ask is because I am in the midst of setting up a portal site. So far I have 3 mini-sites that ultimately drive traffic to the main site, but I have many many web pages under the domain of the main site that I would like to optimize for different keywords.

One last question...

Are we to submit (by hand) each individual webpage
example: (www.mydomain.org/directory1/key-word.htm)
or will just submitting www.mydomain.org suffice even though the two pages are optimized differently?

Thanks in advance...

CNN has lots of different pages on different themes. Seems to work OK for them. ;-)

I see your point...

Portal sites must be great for generating traffic to a paticular Domain Name...

I was reading the boards here and came up with a couple threads where someone was generating 2500 Pages a day for their site all keyword friendly.

I've been doing the same sort of thing but more or less swinging my bat blindfolded. The content I am adding to the site is rich and filled with very relevant information all written with one 'theme' in mind yet all talking about all different sub categories of that theme. However, what I have not done is gone through any real optimization methods other than the basics on any keyword I KNOW are being searched for. I suppose I am hoping for the luck of the draw.

These pages are mainly to add value to the visitors but it would be nice if they had the capability to draw new visitors in and ultimately heading to the main page to see what the Main Theme actually is.

Is it better to add as many pages as possible as quickly as possible or speand more time on each page optimizing effectively on researched keywords?

I suppose that could be the question of the day... LOL

Thanks!

Welcome to webmasterworld Hoystidd,
I would like to point out something important and, IMO, previous than other "deeper and theme-related" optimization discussions.

Are we to submit (by hand) each individual webpage
example: (www.mydomain.org/directory1/key-word.htm)
or will just submitting www.mydomain.org suffice even though the two pages are optimized differently?

Forget subimissions. And even, if you have a good content, rich in KW, forget optimization...
What you need to do if you want to get your page ranking well is build a good link popularity and reputation campaign. Optimize your internal links and get external ones, from quality sites. And focus your attention in a KW rich anchor text.
After that go to your pages and use Headers, bit of bold, italic and anchor text in the KWs and you'll see the results...
My experience is that themes can be useful, and are the best way to present your content from the user point of views, but you need good links to get results.
Hope it helps...

You are right about CNN and their many themed pages.

When I began this whole site thing, I wrote, for the most part, separate pages.
Rarely if ever did I write more than 3 pages into any one document

Each page or department targets a different kind of customer and different age groups. Works well for me this way because I can write totally different meta descripts and tags for each

Though the logistical end of managing so many separate pages may seem somewhat daunting, it really isn't

For each site, I only give the primary domain and the bot boys do the rest by following the links presented on the home page mains.
(my links from the main never go more that 3 levels deep so the bots parse every single page on the domain)
