I know this is a very general question with lots of variables - but what percent of the total monthly SE searches [as extrapolated from Goto to represent all search traffic] do you routinely convert into site traffic?

I know this depends on keyword competitiveness, etc, but I'm trying to get plenty of info so I can make some reasonable estimates. I've worked out a way to calculate the cost per user delvered from an SEO campign, but need to have some search conversion data to make the final values. I'll be happy to share the results with anyone who's interested.

Whew, that is asking alot. There have been quite a few ecomm studies and I'm sure every major site has done studies on conversion rates. However, I don't know of a any public info that has ever been made available. If you have cash to burn, try NPD [npd.com].

I'm not actually looking for a general (sales) conversion rate - more like an SEO search conversion rate. Say you extrapolate the Goto search numbers for keyword "A" to represent the total searches on all SEs:
[4%/100%]x[A/?]= Total SE searches

I'm trying to get a ballpark estimate for what percentage of these total searches an SEO can convert into a site visit. Could a successful SEO expect to receive 2% of the total searches? 5%? 25%?

I know this would be a ballpark value at best, which is why I'm hoping to get enough samples to get a reasonably accurate average.

I sure don't have any numbers like that. First of all, I don't think you can validly extrapolate the GoTo numbers, because the demographics of who uses various search engines are all over the map.

Second, even if I had such numbers and considered them accurate, I don't know what I could do with them in practical terms.

My approach is more pragmatic. A site gets X number of visits from searches. They convert Y%. We'd like to increase X to X2 and Y to Y2. Here's our plan.

That sort of thing.

Hi Marshall this all depends on what the site is selling.

Are you asking How many will BUY from you? or how many will stay at the site?

This is hard unless you could find someone that is selling the same sort of products and ask them ( I know they will not tell you the truth) but their #s should be close to what you are looking for. Some will be 0.045 per surfer all depending on the keywords used. and how targetted the keywords are.

This question is impossible to anwser with out some sort of info. I tried marshal.
