If a site was say the first out of the blocks of widgets, does it hold any sort of advantage over newer sites on the same topic? (assuming all things ie. keywords, SEO etc)

This question has been discussed several times. One factor to confuse the matter is the very banal fact that the first website of its kind will tend to get more incoming links than later ones. But it's still an open question whether age in itself counts.

AffiliateDreamer,
Google PageRank is based on so-called link poularity and nothing more. I was recently assured of this fact.
Your position or "rank" on the SERP's are another thing, but I don't believe age has anything to do with it.
