really? I am asking because I thought too many commas in the title tags are considered spamming. I heard that we should not use more than 2, but I am just checking here.

This is the first I have ever heard anything like this. I've used them on many sites for several years (simply for grammar reasons) with no issues.

This is ok:

This is a bit questionable:

<title>Widget, Widgets, Widget Sales, Widgets Sydney, Widget Widgets</title>

I would consider something like this alright, if done conservatively.

That is what I was referring to as when gramatically needed. I don't have lots of commas on every title tag, but I own quite a few sites, all decently sized and occasionally, you need a few commas ;).

commas are ok if they are for humans, like agerhart's example. a bad example would be
<title>widgets, blue widgets, red widgets, widgets</title>

also make sure not to use any special symbols like the arrows, sqaures or other eye catching stuff, they are very easy for search engines to notice

As I'm interpreting this question, it's not about commas, but about whether lists are allowed.

There's not exactly a rule against lists, I think, but there are some problems with excessive repetition of any one word in the title tag, about what this repetition might gain you vrs what it loses for you, and there are other questions like how the engines and searchers look at lists versus natural language.

The thread below asks essentially the same question in a different way, and some of the discussion applies to this thread too. The difference between hyphens and commas isn't that important... they're both delimitors.
