Adding index.html to links, Good or Bad?

Is adding index.html to links, Good or Bad?

Hi,

I just discovered this great site. Thanks to all those who help out us less savvy people. :-)

Someone recommended that I add index.html to all of my links. Let's say my homepage has a link to /business/. If I change it to /business/index.html then Google might give me a penalty because I will no longer have any links to /business/

What do you think? Should I take the risk?

Thanks,
Paul

No! You've formatted the links properly for a root level URI. There is no need to add index.html.

Who told you that? ;)

You can link to either or. The preferred method would be

/business/

yeah, I don't think it really matters either way. Most people don't include the index.html though.

it helps to have the format
/business
if you are referring people to that page away from the computer eg in a paper advertisement. I think it looks better and there's less room for error too
