Sub domains or directory structure?

To use one over the other?

I am in the process of starting a large content-based website and as far as linking goes I can choose to have widget.domain.com or domain.com/widget for linking within my site as well as incoming links for the various channels in my site.

What would you guys recommend in terms of getting the best placements in SERPs. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

IMHO, widget.domain.com will be looked at as a unique site, and different from bluewidget.domain.com. On the other hand, pages under www.domain.com/widget are just another page on the same site as pages under www.domain.com/bluewidget.

You have to extrapolate your own pros and cons from there.
