Text without <p> considereded anyway?

Does benefits using p instead div?

This question is not exactly about html,
since text is important as a factor to match content with searches I wonder if is exactly the same to SE eyes using:

<div align="left"><b>My text, bla</b></div>

Than:

<p align="left"><b>My text, bla</b></p>

Will both be considered as text, readed and valued?
Particulary I don't use much <p> it generates some undesired space, and won't edit p with .css since I use it as spacer naturally.

What do you say?
