Hello :)

I have a client that I am making an E-Commerce site for. He told me that he will be purchasing keywords. I was curious if someone could explain this in greater detail to me. Will it have a negative or positive effect on his site.

I have heard good and bad things about purchasing keywords but it is something I know nothing about.

Thanks. :)

This could mean a number of things. For starters:

Keyword research using something like Wordtracker.

Bidding on Overture/Adwords keywords.

Signing up with one of these damn 'we have exclusive relationships with all the top search engines and we can guarantee you number one positioning for any keywords you buy' scams.

I'd bet on the latter, but more information needed.

Buying keywords ranks right up there with buying bridges. There are plenty of scoundrels out there that will sell you either or both, but I've yet to see anyone take either one home.

did amazon buy "books"?
did ebay buy "auction"?
did hotmail buy "free email"?

You can buy advertising space on billboards, the sides of city buses, on city bus stop benches, sky-writing is pretty cool too, then there's radio, TV, and the search engines.

I would say that buying a word is a fleeting concept.
