Could someone please advise on the following situation I have found myself in. I have a band website that I need to promote further on the search engines. The main page contains the band logo, navigation and content (E.g news from a database).

I have read that I need to include the keywords (E.g music, band, etc) of the website in the main heading (H1?) of the page but what should I do if I this information isn't required on the site and what impact will this have on the search engine?

Thanks

Well, to get your site found for specific phrases here's a few things you can do...

1. The H1 thing is great

2. Create "doorway" pages that aren't really doorway pages, just entrances. Make them targeted to specific content... ie. song title, or music genera. Then have all of your site's navigation and graphics on these pages, so the user can just click into your site. Do not make these entry pages a redirect. Place these pages in the root, and watch duplication of content.

3. Don't try to optimize for 1 word phrases like, music, or rock, you probably won't get good results. Instead, try to think like a person trying to find your site, do your research, and optimize for well trafficked, and targeted phrases.

Take those 3 simple beginnings, and hone them and you will do well

Brett's post on Success with google is also a good starting point. It's about google, but a lot of the advice will work with any SE

Hi again! Thanks for the advice, I have followed most of the areas mentioned while designing the site.

If I type the URL into google (without the www.) I can see it's there, but I can't find the actual site on any page if I search by keywords.

I have even entered keywords that I have included in my code and am given 3 pages of sites but mine is not listed at all :(

It almost seems as if Google knows about my site but does not include it? Any ideas?

Humbly adding to the advice and links above..

but I can't find the actual site on any page if I search by keywords...

Think of the <h1> tag as a way for you to help 'describe' the page for the spider, the same goes for your <title> element in the head section.

One of the more important things is to get other pages outside your site to link to your pages, if you can get a few links in to these descriptive pages you should eventually get referrals, if the search engine is doing its job properly ;)

The "anchor text" of these links will also help.
