Paragraphs and List Items

I just registered the fact that several people I know have been talking about closing paragraph tags for better attention from the search engines.

Is this true? Even though paragraph tags don't strictly need to be closed? What is this buzz that I just registered -- I never closed a paragraph tag in my life!

Does anything like this apply to list items?

I do use them from time-to-time Tedster. For awhile, Alta was giving a boost for having them on the page because they could dramatically deduce where true paragraphs (actual content) were. I don't think they are anymore.
