Should Search Engines List Results from other search engines?

If not why not?

Hot topic at the moment as Google has been delisting hard coded SERPs from its database over the past few weeks.

We have a few issues here, not least of which is what is a competitor search engine and what is not.

Do you exclude all hard coded serps if you exclude one? What is a hard coded SERP? What is the differentiation between SERPs and non SERPs pages.

There are many other issues which impinge on these, so full discussion may not be possible, but lets try to discuss this issue without resort to political hideouts.

I say that a single set of results from alternative search engines might be justified. It used to be quite common to have direct search links to other engines within a SERP, although provided separately from the main results. The ODP still does this.

With directories I would again say that a single copy of the listings should be included within the main SERPs.

The real problem with this occur when we have the same data appearing multiple times from different sites.

I've often seen my site code within a "search site's" google listing (description), it's there because I know what I'm doing and the search site knows how to crib! Not good, in my opinion.
