Hi,
I have a lot of content on my index page and I want to know about the right way to make the headings.

For example which is better?

A)...

<h1>Widgets</h1>
<h2>Widgets for her</h2>
<p>blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for her blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for her blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for her (linked to widgets-for-her.htm) blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for her blah blah </p>
<h2>Widgets for him</h2>
<p>blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for him blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for him blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for him (linked to widgets-for-him.htm) blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for him blah blah </p>
<h2>Widgets for kids<h2>
<p>blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for kids blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for kids blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for kids (linked to widgets-for-kids.htm) blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for kids blah blah </p>

Or

B:....
<h1>Widgets</h1>
<h2>For Her</h2>
<p>blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for her blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for her blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for her (linked to widgets-for-her.htm) blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for her blah blah </p>
<h2>For Him</h2>
<p>blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for him blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for him blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for him (linked to widgets-for-him.htm) blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for him blah blah </p>
<h2>For Kids<h2>
<p>blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for kids blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for kids blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for kids (linked to widgets-for-kids.htm) blah blah blah blah blah blah widgets for kids blah blah </p>

The difference is I am not using the main keywords "widgets" in the H2 tag... since the H2 is meant to come under the H1... so the "widget word" I am excluding

Is this correct or would i be better off with <h1>Widgets Blue</h1>, h1>Widgets Yellow</h1>, h1>Widgets Green</h1>, h1>Widgets Red</h1>, h1>Widgets Orange</h1>,

Or

<h1>Widgets</h1>
<h1>Widgets Blue</h1>, <h1>Widgets Yellow</h1>, h1>Widgets Green</h1>, h1>Widgets Red</h1>, h1>Widgets Orange</h1>,

Thank you!

Consider the <h1> tag as having a function very similar to the webpage's Title. The <h1> tag is ideally used once per webpage. It can be used more than once per web page provided you have a webpage filled with significantly different content.

The <h2> tag identifies more specifically the content within paragraphs and although it can contain primary keyphrases, it is intended to introduce pieces of the content descrbed in the <h1>.

Now, this gets abused in SEO. People stuff Heading tags meaninglessly with keyphrases for the sake of giving emphasis to the keyphrase. To some degree, this usually influences the ranking of the keyphrase for that webpage. However, when the qualified visitor shows up and sees all these keyphrase stuffed Headings it doesn't make much sense to him, hits the back button and there goes a wasted opportunity for a telephone call.

Heading must be used naturally as in writing a thesis paper. There are main headings describing the different part of the page and there are sub-headings geared to more specifically identify various componets below it.

So. Do whatever would appear to be natural, aiming to please both the search engine and the subsequent Internet visitor simultaneously. Stuff the odd <h2> if you want but don't make your use of Headings appear to be mechanical.

None of your examples is very good. Take a look at this 2003 discussion, one of many on the forum, as a basic introduction to the idea of <h1> headings....

Here are several more recent discussions, probably harder to follow, that get more into some of the (incorrect) assumptions you're making about multiple uses of the H1 and juxtaposition of h1 and h2, but you should read the earlier discussions first....

At this date, thinking is that <h1> tags have been so misused that they aren't considered by search engines at all.

Also, keep in mind that headings work in conjunction with page titles, and the limitations of title length limit how many phrases you can target on each page. Take a look at the threads I recommend in this discussion about page titles....
