Strategy to increase traffic to a site under construction

I am currently working on my newly acquired domain. It may take a few days to finish up and launch. I was thinking to setup a page with something unique (animation, images, anything that relates to my niche) and submit across various social networking and bookmarking sites. May sound cheap but at least the site will get noticed and it will get some free traffic till I fully launch it.

Are there any cons to this strategy?

Getting the site noticed at a time when it isn't completed and has nothing useful on it seems counterproductive. Human visitors and search engines will judge the site based on what they find when they go there, not based on what you plan to make it eventually.

Also, trying to get a few days head start is too short-term thinking. Unless you're the first to report on a fast-developing news story, a few days won't make a bit of difference.
