I can't believe that AOL and Netscape have gotten away with pop-ups as long as they have. They are the most aggravating thing on the web.... Banners you can ignore, popups interfere with the flow of everything you do....
I don't see this as a revenue stream for the portals/SE's.. What we have been seeing is alliance w/ Pay-per-click engines, rather than developing their own pay-per-click system...
MetaCrawler scores of near the 1000 mark, used to be obtained by top listings in Excite/Webcrawler/Infoseek/AV. Now just go bid away at Goto/Findwhat/Sprinks/Kanoodle, and the majority of your pay-per-click traffic outside of Goto, will originate from Metacrawler.
with NBCi.com/SNAP showing goto results, this generates income without selling traditional advertising.. I see SE's/portals going away from DMOZ, or enhancing it with paid listings.. If Goto was smart, they would start a pay-per-bid directory on their portal, by category, and strike deals w/ their current partners to supply the top 3 categoy listings also.... :)
I mean, I can't imagine that Reebok would be happy with their site framed by Nike.
So someone figures out how to do the logistics, what kind of lawsuits would happen if, for some reason, the system failed and Reebok *was* framed by Nike?
Or worse, let's say a phone company, Motorola has their page come up and their site is framed by Sprint? It looks like Motorola is telling you to use one phone carrier over another.
I can't even imagine.

It's already being done. Last time I looked (eons ago) Jeeves served up returns in a framed page, so does Compuserve search, I believe. There's always the handy "unframe" link at the top, but how many average surfers actually do that?
