my client launched a new website a few months ago and I've been finding links on the 'net to pages on the old site. when I ask the web hosting company to set up 301 redirects, they instruct me to create aliases in my CMS system. they say it is a more "powerful" message to search engines then a 301 redirect.

But having no prior experience with aliases v. 301, I was hoping to get a third opinion.....anyone?

They are wrong. An alias creates Duplicate Content.

You want a 301 redirect, one that works on a per-page basis from the old to the new URL.
