If I have a site that sells widgets, and i own the URL widgets.com is it possible for some to outrank me if they search for widgets? In this example, i have owned the URL widgets.com for several years and i am the consensus authority on widgets? Thanks. Do you know of examples of this happening?

having keywords in the URL is good but it is not a fool-proof method to rank for that keyword. i have seen many websites having the keyword in their URL but ranking on the 2nd or the 3rd page of search engines.even my website has keyword in the URL but i am still at 12th rank

It always comes down to competition of your keywords.

Common words have more competition and uncommon words have a shot at #1.

Last year, I put up a site for a woman using "firstname-lastname.com". Her first name was very common, but her last name was very very unique, and she appearred #1 in Google instantly.

My first and last name are much more common and I can only get as close as the 2-5th page.

If I do a site for john-smith.com, that may never show up.

In your case, just because you get a domain that may be great like cars.com, do you think your going to out perform ford or chevrolet in the search results? Nope, aint going to happen.
