Dangling links

How should I optimize these pages?

After being a around here for a short while I have come to understand that optimizing dangling links can improve my page rank. It’s just dawned on me that I have a wwwboard archive on my site that is being indexed. I am currently using a more modern style forum and have only had these on the site for archive value.
All of the messages have no return links to my home page or any page on my site. My site is also a framed site which I’ve come to realize may not be the best idea, but I’m not going to change that aspect right now.

My questions are:
Should I put links on these pages to all of the main pages in my site or just to the home page?

The link to the home page will have to open in “parent frame” because the messages are displayed within a frame. Will this make any difference?

The quality of content on these pages varies from just a few words exchanged to some quality questions and answers. There are about 1500 pages of messages. Could doing all this do me any harm? Could they be seen as spam?

The problem is if you (or no one else) are not linking to the archive it should eventually be dropped from most indexes. You'll need to put up an archive link somewhere if you don't want it to die.

As far as linking back, I would put up links that would most likely entice them into jumping over. Make them as relevant as possible without killing yourself.

No problem it being considered spam but personally I'd just throw in a link to the new board & let it die. Nothing worse than landing in a ghost forum.

Thanks for the reply skipfactor, makes a lot of sense, I was only thinking about it from an "improving the site pr" perspective.

More suggestions appreciated, from yourself or anyone who cares to comment.

That's a lot of content to neglect. I'd probably build an archive. Get rid of the fluff and just utilize the key topics that are of value to your visitors. Yup, that is going to take some manual labor, but the end result will be worth it.

I'd also create an index or table of contents that is linked to from various sections of the site. That table of contents would basically be a user friendly site map with deep links to the archives.
