Redirection: cpanel vs registrar vs .htaccess

I have a number of sites I want to point to one other site. Is there a 'best' way of doing this? I tried a 301 directly through the registrar but it did not redirect. I did it through cpanel successfully, but I would like to know if the .htaccess way is superior.

by 'best' I meant from an SEO point of view, if that were not obvious. :)
