Dual National Googlebot?

Is the googlebot multinational?

First time post so please accept my apologies for what might be a really stupid question.

I have created a couple of small websites for local companies in Northern Ireland and while very modest, they rank well for search terms that have northern Ireland or Belfast etc at the end.
Recently though the companies have mentioned that they would like ranked in Google.ie as well as Google.co.uk due to an excellent €uro to Pound exchange rate. I'm fairly new to SEO and have found myself in this position as I provide the businesses with IT Support so realise that I'm going to have to learn quickly how to get the sites ranking well for the search terms without NI or Belfast and also what needs done to have them ranking well in google.ie

The sites are currently hosted in London and I figured that I should purchase space in Dublin so have done that with the .ie domain and in the short term have uploaded a copy of the site but am figuring that this may be treated as duplicate content.

Do you have any suggestions of things I can try in the short term to get things off the ground without upsetting the googlebot etc?

welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com], RichardTobin!

that is actually a common question.
this thread addresses many of the issues you should consider:
Internationalizing a local website [webmasterworld.com]

there is also a UK & Ireland Search Engines [webmasterworld.com] forum you might want to look at.
