Site Indexed by Google, Now What?

I'm new to this, so bear with me. A modest site I've built for a friend's business showed up on Google in about a month and has also made it to dmoz.org. Now, we're about 2 months later. The site shows up on the first page of results if I type in the exact company name, but is still at the very bottom. Will it eventually be the first web site displayed when typing in it's name exactly? I'm assuming this is based on the sites above it having more traffic. Secondly and more importantly, when I type in his line of business in his specific region, ("[snip]") it fails to show up altogether. Again, I'm assuming this will impove in time. He's been submitting his site wherever he can. Obviously, I'm not nearly as concerend with the my first question as I am with the second. Nobody would even know the name of his business to type in, but would be typing "[snip]" to find a business. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A proper page Title (*Not* the company name), a good Description, compelling and on-topic on-page text, and incoming links from well-ranked sites with relevant content will help - See the cited article, and search for the follow-ups, too.

I'm not sure what you meant about "submitting" the site. Be aware that submitting your pages repeatedly to leading search engines is not necessary and therefore it's a waste of time, and that submitting your pages to and/or joining "link farms" is a bad idea. If you link to junk, the search engines will assume you're junk, too.
