Lets say "John" is a widget seller and already has an established company website "johnscompany.com" and is keen to keep his existing domain name and online presence.

However "widget.com" has become available to register, Is there anything that John can do to use the "widget.com" domain to generate traffic for his company website without setting it up as a holding page or duplicate presence? ie. Will a straight 301 redirect from widget.com to johnscompany.com help search engine results?

I love to hear any ideas/theories anyone has on this.

Cheers

Skip the 301 unless you need to use it - which in this case - sounds like you don't.

Re: possible option. Develop a widget.com portal. Build the site around the theme of that particular widget. List the companies (with links) that sell it (yes, including your competitors). Do write good useful copy that is NOT a rehash of what you have on the current site. Get some experts and consumer reviews. Build the traffic and usefulness then give your company the premium ad space and links. Don't go overboard with the links to your own site.
