Site is in the Engines, but want to change focus

Site has a focus with keywords, but want to change focus, use new keywords.

I have a site that I submitted to the SE's months ago. I get a small stream of traffic every month. It is in a fairly competitive field and I have only done minial optimization work on it. I am actually going to change the direction of the site.

It currently offers one type of thing, but I am going to have it now offer many types of related things. I want each of these related things to show up in the SEs..so I am wondering - Once you have a site submitted with a certian set of keywords, etc, is it piossible to change directions and get good results with the new keywords? or is making a whole new site in order? Also - if I have several related "widgets" on a site, is it better to break them out into their own sites, then link them back to the main site?

Am I making sense? Maybe this will simplify. I'm not selling cars, but I'm using them as an analogy here:

Let's say right now I have a website for Ford Mustangs. I want to change the site to be for Cars in general, with sections on Sports Cars, SUVs, Sedans, etc. It is important that the seperate sections can be found in the SEs.

What is the best way to go about this?

My best tools were from this site, Bretts page on getting good ranking in google in one year is a must, sorry don't have url! someone should post it for you, also overtures keyword tool is a must, with both those alone should yeild some good information on how to target your new market

I totally changed the keywords and focused on more specific content, which really helped the site, I'm actually redoing some pages right now to better fit the content, but I saw a good change when I changed the site, kind of like what you are doing.
