Hidden Scrollable Table in Header with Text

I came across a tactic on a site such that if you right click on the logo in the header and then use your mouse wheel to scroll down, you'll see a series of keywords. The keywords vary from page to page.

This means you have a scrolling table with no visible scroll bar, it is completely impossible to know that there is keyword-stuffed text in the header unless you accidentally right click on their logo and decide to use your mouse wheel. The site using the technique ranks well.

What do people think about this? Is it not the sort of spam likely to get a site in trouble?

Is it not the sort of spam likely to get a site in trouble?

Of course it is. There are most likely other strategies at hand that would add to the equation. Anything hidden like that is going to be a concern. Remember, just because it is hidden, doesn't mean it is always being used to deceive. In fact, it is the other way around. Many of us use various CSS and JS techniques that show/hide content.

What you describe above sounds exactly as you describe it. But, are you sure that "using this technique" is the driving factor behind their rankings? The search engines do provide outlets for you to report this type of finding if you wish to do so.

What POR said.

The thing is, it's very easy to get wrapped up in this stuff, but it's usually a no-win sort of approach.

I feel a bit dirty thinking about reporting spammers to the engines. Not that I approve of the tactics. Just that cavemom and cavedad taught me to take care of my own cave, rather than worrying about what others may be up to.

So, IMHO, learn from what they and every other site around you are doing, make your site better, make your marketing better, and kill the #*$!s legitimately. :p

You *may* get some short term gains out of this technique, but you would definitely put your site at risk of getting penalized or even worse banned.

From what I've read about Google over the past few months, it doesn't sound like the algorithm is the only thing keeping spam out of their index. It sounds like they're also editorially scrubbing their index as well. So if the algo doesn't get you, at some point in time a human will.

Stay away from the dark side...!
