Paid links and penalties

I hope this is the correct forum. I am concerned about search engine penalties for paid links. I do not have any, but on both ends of the equation, I do not want to make a mistake.

I have been looking at < a site that > allows me to let others buy ads on my site, and I do not have to do anything. Some large sites are using it, and seem to be doing rather well given the rates they charge. However, I worry this is considered a paid link, and would be penalized. Can someone elaborate on this?

Banner ads in general, they are certainly paid for, but am I going to be penalized for putting one up on a site? Seems banner ads and banners in general are the nature of the web, going back so many years. At the end of the day, isnt an AdSense ad more or less a paid link? I am not seeing the distinction of paid links that people can report and have a search engine (google) rank you down, versus a normal link on the page.

Blogrools, check out my links, supported sites, all those types of pages are now off limits? I want to share with others some of the sites I like, but how is google, or any other search engine, to know those are not link pays versus genuine love for other sites in my same arena?

Thanks so much for your time.

Google is more concerned with paid links that pass page rank. Adsense ads do not pass page rank. Using rel=nofollow with paid links keeps you in the clear, however most won't buy links such as these. If you link to related content because it makes sense to do so you don't necessarily have to use rel=nofollow.

OK, so an advertising company that has a system for placing ads, as long as I can add in rel=nofollow, I would be in the clear?
