Ok, it is common knowledge that the more back-links to your site, the better. I wonder how people feel here, about submitting your site to directories? I.e.: #1. The more back links you have, the higher your eventual page rank #2. The higher your page rank, the easier people find your site #3. The easiler to find your site, the more susceptible your ads get clicked

Backlinks are not all equal - some pass more value than others. A page may pass value due to its page rank, or due to its Authority, which we don't know how to measure. A link can also pass juice or anchor value. While 'more links' is better, lots of very low value links may be worth less than one valuable link.
Some food for thought

Really appreciate this insight. I appreciate such fast viewpoints....I have been listing site I want in "newly launched" directories which I have checked their PR, which sites at #0 . . . .then again, my site is #0 so they can "organically" elevate I assume . . .
(Two rights don't make a wrong huh?)

There's nothing wrong with listing in a new directory, if it looks like its not just a spammy made-for-SEO directory. I've done that more than once and a couple of years later had a backlink from a nice high PR page. You do need to make sure you don't spend too much time submitting to them, because they are a gamble - only some of them will make it, and you do need a more diverse profile than just directory links.

Can you mention what a good "profile" would consist of? Based on your experience? Thanks!
