WebmasterWorld Welcome and Guide to the Basics [webmasterworld.com]
Newcomers guide to basics of website development, submission and promotion.
There really aren't any free submission search engines left out there that are of any value. Google will find your site quicker from a link then it will using their Submit URL form. And, as heini says, if there are no links pointing to you from somewhere else, the free submit form is of no value.
You might also want to consider reading through the Google knowledgebase [webmasterworld.com] since a lot of the advice there will help a little with your rankings in other search engines too.

I will do the further reading but how can I get links pointing to my site.
The ODP, [dmoz.org...] , is a good place to start. The Yahoo directory is another. Along with those, look for pertinent sites that might be interested in giving you a link because of your dazzling content, (the content part is very important), and then send them a nice email asking them to consider doing so.
Avoid dodgy link-trading sites... they'll do more harm than good.
You are getting some excellent advice.Another avenue to take is the niche-directory route( some call them topic specific directories) These can take some time, but they are well worth the it, especially when finding some diamonds in the rough.
Ater listing your keywords and descriptions search G. As an example search for: travel directories +.com add url.
Then do a synonym search: ~travel directories + .com add url
Next repeat using .org .edu etc
You can also check your regional directories starting with your state. or municppality.
One caveat: before doing these searches be organized. You may want to do a spread sheet using excel or some other program to track the submissions.
