learning about Blogs

I know this has probably been discussed a bunch around here, but I'm new to all of this. I'm trying to find our more info about blogs. Somebody told me that this is a good way to get links, to post replies to blogs related to my industry. Is this right or is this a spamming technique? This sounds similar to posting in guestbooks. Right? Or should I be aggressively be posting in blogs all day.

Is it similar to guestbooks? Yes.

You can really hit the blogs up hard and work up your link popularity, but they might be filtered out sometime soon.

Of course, anything might be filtered out sometime soon. The guideline Google gives is:

Is it something you would do if there were no Search Engines?

I have to think the answer there would be a resounding yes, provided we are talking about blogs that are genuinely related to your site. And then you don't want to be posting comments like, "Cool! And chek out my site: www.blabla.com" -- make sure you only comment when you have something legitimate to add to the discussion.

Well, I know about some people who are still doing Guestbook Postings and are seeing their PR rise and stuff like that. Each month Google filters out a lot of them.Now I think same applies to BLOGS. They will work till Google removed / filters them out.

I am a weblogger myself and I tried to get better listings by placing comments in a lot of weblogs. It didn't do much good for me (besides a temporarily rise of visitors that where clicking on my link that was placed below my comments).

And it'll be only a matter of time before Google will filter all those comments out of the index. If you're commenting at various blogs just to improve your PR than it'll work on the short term, on the long term it is a waste of time.

I agree that the rankings benefit of this technique will decline, but intelligent and selective posting in on-topic blogs will help establish your reputation as well as that of your site. Assuming your site is worthy, you may develop some spin-off links from other bloggers (and blog readers) who visit. Post for the right reasons, though. If you have nothing useful to contribute, your posts will be seen for the spam they are.

Please don't post viagra links on my blog, I get enough of that already. ;)

I do know one guy who's build a 'blacklist' for MovableType (one of the most popular blogging platforms). "Comment spamming" is at about the same level as the viagra, sex products, get rich quick type spam that we get in our email box every day.

If you're serous about being a part of the blogging community, then join in. If you're just doing it to increase your PageRank, it's going to show and you will be banned. Just say 'no' to spamming.

If you don't do it automatically, and your posts are not removed by the blog owners, and its on-topic, I wouldn't consider it as spam.

Dirkz, fluff comments with a signature URL or other pointless URL drops constitute spam in my book - the blog owners may be too lazy or too busy to remove them, but that doesn't change their character.
