I have a few sites that have been indexed in google, ink, and all the web, but none have been picked up by AltaVista. Is there a way to get sites into AltaVista without paying?
Yeah, I know I am cheap, but I am just starting and trying to feed my family. Boo Hoo, sob sob.
Anyway, any direction would be appreciated.

Without links you could be waiting up to a few months on some SE's, with other people linking to your site you could be on the SE's in days (sometimes hours).
I don't bother submitting to any SE anymore. I just link to it from all the web sites I control and check back later that day or the next couple of days. It's rare I have to wait longer than a day anymore.

AV uses a simple(r) link pop factor in it's algo so you want those links to stay in place.
You may actually be suprised how much traffic you get from links, and how fast that traffic disappears when your link gets killed because you dropped your link to their site.
You don't want your site to be a dead end, give people a reason to come back even if it is to find that link you have to that other cool site.
You should really worry about getting links to your site that people might stumble on. Think of a robot as a really fast human with no attention span. If a slow human can find links to your site without searching, so can the robot.
