Redirecting and Search Engines

A client (who is runs an osteopathic registrar office) wants to include in their website a directory for their members. This would mean that anyone (ie the general public) searching for an osteopath could look under specialised skill and/or location.

I was going to make static pages for each member so as to assist in search engine rankings/traffic - as each would include profile/articles within their page.

My client is concerned that if some members pages are ranked and others are not then it may cause friction.

My only thought is to redirect any 'members profiles' to the homepage if accessed from outside the website.

A couple of questions:
1. Is this a common accepted practice (ie does it sound okay)?
2. If so what is a method to do this that will not annoy search engines?

Hope this is somewhat clear...

Well if you are going to build a page JUST for the search engine (which it sounds like what redirecting to the main page would do) it would be treading into the spamming arean I would think.

Instead of making profile pages, how about a collection of their articles with the ability to search the directory on each page? Do articles about the particular aspects of each profession and what the specialties are and let the visitors search from that point?

Good Luck
