A while ago on this thread some good folks discussed SEO Rates : [webmasterworld.com...]

But from a business person's perspective where optimal performance is sought, I wondered what business model might work best as a win/win for both.

What i find complex is that other factors come into play. e.g. conversion rates , competition, cross promotion interference where the effects of one are indistinguishable from the other [ e.g. PPC and SEO cross over effect ].

Has anyone experienced a good business model that works?

Sure

It's called the "Each Search Engine Optimization Campaign is Different" approach.

This implies that each SEO strategy needs to be carefully developed according to the various differing factors. Thus, pricing plans are out the door.

It takes actual SEO experience in order to prepare a fair SEO quote.
