I design many web pages for various businesses and get most of my inbound links to mysite from pages I have done. My question is should the link text that I put on these pages be simply "mysite" or would changing them to "keyword" be a better idea ? I can change them to whatever I want, and could make them different from eachother. Is the link text enough to make a big difference in the rank of "mysite" ? In other words is it worth the effort of changing the link text?
On some engines, yes -- particularly Google where links are the name of the game. In fact, I've seen examples where the TITLE tag of the linking page was the only keyword occurrance in a Google referal -- that is, the keyword was not on the site itself, or in link text, but only in the title tag.
So, where you can, getting your keywords into the title of the page, not just the link text, may be another good move.
Link text is also a factor on AV (if they ever come to rest again) and Inktomi, but it doesn't seem to be quite as big a part of the ranking algo as it is on Google.
