Still beneficial to place text above or within a header?

I've seen dozens of sites which place a keyword-rich sentence in 8pt font at the very top of the homepage, before the header graphics appear. I've also seen many other sites with text integrated into the header, as though it was a byline for a company name. In other cases, designers place a few links at the top of the page, generally to their sitemap and/or some of their service pages.

I've always followed the assumption that its ideal for the first sentence of text on your page to contain your keywords. But if you don't mind your first sentence appearing somewhat clunky with your target keywords, is it unecessary to place inconspicuous text above or within your header? I'm debating on whether or not I should reposition certain text or links to the top of my homepage.

It is ideal for your keywords to be the first line of your body, however I do agree with you that often they look out of place on a website.

If your website is for users then really think about them - will it look stupid and discredit the company?
