Prevent Indexing of Drop Down Menu Content

I have drop down menus on most pages of my site which are physically at the top of my pages, above which are images. The search engines start indexing the text in these drop down menus, and thus I'm ending up with major duplicate content issues.

How can I exclude the content of the dropdown menus from being spidered?

Thanks in advance!

Why would you have duplicate content issues?

Google parses off template sections of sites just fine.
