"You are right that you want the domain listed now but if you get caught with duplicate content the old geocities site could be the one that is kept while the domain gets axed - maybe permanently or at least for months and months."
My new site was taken out while my old site remained.
If only I knew what I was doing (and about this forum) sooner!
I had an old site up with different content for a while. I've since created a new site that has my photography content. Before the last indexing, if you searched for my name my old site would come up in first or second and my new site would be towards the bottom of the first page. But, since the last indexing, my new site isn't listed at all and the old site is #1.
All the old site did for the last few months is redirect to my new site.... which at the time, I didn't know was a bad thing. The problem is, I've now taken down the old site so there is no way to find my new site when doing a search on my name. I am trying to get a 301 redirect in place, however, the old site is hosted at homstead.com and I don't have access to my root director to create the needed file. I've emailed their tech support, but I'm not expecting much.
So, how do I get back in the search engines? As it is now, if they index the old site they will get a 404 error. Will that take out the old site and cause the new site to get re-indexed? Do I just have to just wait it out?
Thanks,
jeff singer
Yesterday I just started an adword account and a couple ads with google... is it a coincidence that the next day I'm back in their results?
