I have a client who has recently removed a product from their site and deleted the pages.
How would the engines react to keeping the page live but running new informative content explaining that the product has been removed.
My client is within the finance sector and they could chose to bring the product back at any time.
I have been challenged that maintaining the page would be frowned upon by the engines. As long as they dont dup the user into thinking the product exists there shouldnt be a problem should there?
Thanks
Stephen

I don't see any problem with that and I doubt the SEs would either (they can't see anyway, they are blind). As long as the product has a future, I see no reason not to continue to promote it. Since I don't know the reason for discontinuation, I can't comment.
This product has been temporarily discontinued. Volume inquiries are welcome. We also produce custom versions of this product on request. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Maybe a detailed explanation of why the product was discontinued? How about details of future plans for the product?
