Hello, I have used Brett's Search Engine Simulator. I think I used it last week. Now when i clikc on the link it takes me to the sign in screen and when i enter my information, it just loops.

Is the simulator gone or not working? It is a great tool.

Hi and welcome everlast

Are you talking about the Search Engine Spider Simulator? It's at http*//www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/sim_spider.cgi.

Tried to link to it, but there indeed seems to be a problem, linking gets you to the login, copy/pasting the adress gets you there though.

Has anyone filed a bug report about this yet? If not I'll file one.

Not a bug. You have to go to the tools page and click on the sim spider link.
It needs a referer (to avoid getting slammed). If i'm not wrong.
Cool Brett boy. :)

Go here and try it:
[searchengineworld.com...]

>when i copied the link you provided it brought me to an MSN page

... because you didn't remove the *. We often use this here to make a link not clickable.

http://www..com/

As Yidaki mentions, simply pasting in the url as shown will take you to an MSN page....when the asterisk is allowed to remain in the string.

We all know how that can be. ;)

This solution shown to me is much, much better. It not only takes you to the site in question, but...and perhaps most importantly...it does not show a referrer from WebmasterWorld.

http{b}{/b}://www..com

If you want to post these this way, simply replace {} with [] and you're on your way. :)

You seem to be correct about the need for a referrer from WW, Yidaki.

It's still a confusing process because the login page states the need for re-logging in is, "We require login from users from your ISP because of abuse. Please login and then back up to view."

I was already logged in. But I logged in again and then, as per instructions, backed up to view what I hoped would be the spider simulator. Instead I got the login page again.

There's a bug in the process somewhere. I'll leave it to Brett to decide how best to deal with it.

absolutely!

>it does not show a referrer from WebmasterWorld

Getting confusing now ... you'll need a referer to access the sim spider directly!

not that i am pe{n}dantic. ;)

>But I logged in again and then I got the login page again

Sure, that's the same with 404's.
You can try to login until christmas and never access it.
It's clever, not a bug imho. ÷)

Thank Jim Morgan for that one. :)

>>it does not show a referrer from WebmasterWorld
>Getting confusing now...you'll need a referer to access the sim spider directly!

I was speaking to the broader use of posting styles to eliminate/reduce this little 'aside' regarding MSNs involvement and Brett's concerns regarding linking out.

Just seemed like a good opportunity...

You have an odd sense of what's clever. :)

To me it's just plain confusing and rude. Instead, please tell me why I can't have access to a particular page. Don't put me into an endless loop of logins that are never going to succeed and tell me it's clever. That does not fit within my definition of professionalism.

On my sites, if a valid referrer is needed but not detected I show the user an error page that explains a valid (or sometimes just a non-blank) referrer is needed.

I know this is rather off-topic for this forum. My apologies for pushing this issue but IMO it's important. Perhaps moving it to a more suitable forum would be appropriate?

I agree with you on that. But i can imagine that it's probably not worth the work to make a routine for WebmasterWorld members who have a understanding and one more rude routine to shock abusers. The login screen for 404's disappoints me too. But since i know that it works like it works, i can pretty good ignore it and move on. :)

I think I just found a bug:

I am using
<base href="http://www.domain.tld">
in my header, and my links look like this:
<a href="site.htm">Site</a>

Google and other Searchengines do not have a problem with this, but the Search Engine Spider Simulator returns the following:

Link:
http://site.htm

I was logged in so why did I need to log in again? Until I ran across this thread I didn't understand why. We can't assume all WW members understand every nuance of the website's programming. :)

Now that I know about this particular issue I've updated my bookmark to take me to the above referenced URL where I then have to click on the sim spider.

Every website has its own personality in terms of how its programmed. WW has some odd personality quirks but thankfully the members and content are worth putting up with the quirkiness. :)
