I've found that there is no one answer to questions like that. It's going to come down to your own experiences, needs and personal preferences. And there are lots of great options out there. Also, different software and tools do different things well.
Generally, searching on phrases that are specific to your needs should get you a head start on things. Personally, once I get a list of options, I search on those options' brand names and find comments from around the Web. And I rely heavily on the recommendations of friends and some of the top bloggers in the space.
Use search. Search is your friend. ;-)
Hope that helps!
Take it from someone who has personally gone that route: SEO software is a 'crutch' and even if you find one that actually works for you, you will eventually have to learn to 'walk' without it. (Sorry for the bad analogy, best I could come up with).
I spent years thinking of SEO as something far too complex to actually do hands-on. That's rubbish. Forget the software and focus on two things: forums like this one to understand the structural basics (linking strategies and such), and a few books on XHTML/CSS. I truly believe that will get you to the promised land far quicker than any software could.
SEO tools, OTOH, ah, now we're talkin'. :)
But to have a good use for seo tools, one must first know what one is trying to find out or accomplish: Check backlinks? Competitive analysis? Server headers checks? Efficient site creation and publishing? Hunt for great links? Evaluate on-page text? Page validation? WHOIS data? The list is endless.
Hmmm, now, where did I put that domain name tool I was using last week... ;-)
