Number of words per page

When writing the content for my new page it has come too 5000 words, this is a little long and I will divide it up.

What is the best number of words per page for search engines? I have read the answer is some where between 300 to 500

You'll get varying opinions here, but that range doesn't sound too bad as a general approach. You'll be able to target different words/phrases on the different pages, too.

Looking at Google specifically, there seems to be a preference for lighter pages. Here's a recent discussion of Google optimization: [webmasterworld.com...]
