Hello to all!

Please excuse my English first.

I have beed reading these forums for around 1 week now and I read MANY
MANY post here and also read a lot from SearchEngineWorld.I realized
that although my sites were getting hits(mostlly doorways) I did MANY
mistakes that are clasic "don't" so I am starting to work on improvements.
Especially "eye-opening" were Brett Tabke's articles on SeW.I printed
over 100 pages so far and i am reading them very "precisely" and I will re-read
them over and over again.Almost every 3rd page Homer Simspons "Doh!" was
coming on my mind :)

I didnt want to post here before I get familiar with posts and topics but
I thought that I should ask a question. I didnt quite read all posts that
are here (imposibble to do in week :) and didn't know how to find if this
was answered. So here are few questions:

Most of my pages that i have are in SE.But since i will write new ones what
should i when i am finished: Leave page names as they are now and just overwrite them
or rename aLL pages and add maybe "1" to the end. For example my pages that are in SE
but rank POOR are:

index.htm
page.htm
product.htm
service.htm
etc.

Should i rename it to

index1.htm
page1.htm
product1.htm
service1.htm

or something completelly diffferent than original names and then submit or
is it ok to leave original names and just submit? Few SE that i submited
changed page told me that "page already exists in database".Also maybe I can
get both versions in SE. I must also add that I will mostlly change meta-tags
and add few corrections and paragraphs at the top and not rewrite whole pages.

So what is better - overwrite and submit pages that are in SE or write new pages
and submit these new in addition to old ones.

2. I have read that good thing is to have specific SE optimized pages because
their spiders and algorithms can differ. Question is: How many pages should i
"arrange" for specific SE? All pages (little hard and a lot to do) or just
make some doorways that are Se specific. Do you have let say 10 index.htm(or
maybe the whole site) pages each configured/optimized for
different SE? Or do you make SE specific doorways?

3.Is there any SOFWARE that i can download to test keyword density or to
somehow automate what Brett did in "Designing a High Search Engine Ranking Page" : index th page, strip down page into words(remove double),sort them alphabeticaly
etc.

4. What is good(ok the best) tool to analyze your logs? I mean SOFTWARE that i can
download?

5. I just started looking on my logs(I looked before but only referals not spiders)
,again, thanks to resources/articles on this site % SeW and i found this :

24.147.76.127 - - [10/Jan/2001:05:06:13 -0500] "GET /index.html HTTP/1.0" 200 35216 "-" "ExtractorPro"

Should i worry? Also once i downloaded program that traces,ip's,pings etc
but i forgot what was the program. What program do you use for tracing/investigating
your logs(like 24.147.76.127).

Well, i just wanted to say "hi and thanks" with this post but i ended with several
questions .I hope it is ok for if first timer post so many questions. Questions
are little "amateurish" but Its my first post and I will learn in time! :)

Thank you Again all for this great site(WebmasterWorld & SeW)

Jon Banfi

In my next post I will use the proper category and submit one quetion per topic- this was just first time :)

Firstly I would like to welcome to WMW JonB.

Now on the question for page names.

I would not use "1" after all the names as that is just a flag IMO. Use new fresh names.

Anyone have a list of software that JonB can download to check "KeyWord Density" Etc.

More Info to follow.

welcome to the WmW JonB and to a topic which will definitely have mind numbing effects due to information over-load!

and didn't know how to find if this
was answered

click on the 'dropflag' on top of first post to keep track.

"Is there any SOFWARE that i can download ..."

hmmm.. get your notepad out... check out these sites for some cool tools/tests:
jimtools.com
sitepoint.com
searchengineworld.com
mediahouse.com

i could go on forever... perhaps you should just do a search for what you want on a search engine... i prefer google!!

"I have read that good thing is to have specific SE optimized pages because
their spiders and algorithms can differ"

1page per relative keyword.. (i think that's the general consensus here)
you really have three choices (from what i can gather from your post) optimize your existing sites&re-submit, build gateway pages or check out the advantages of cloaking (if opting for the latter.. make sure you have a no-spam policy!)

"Its my first post and I will learn in time.."

aah.. i remember this so clearly.. good luck!
:)

Welcome aboard JonB! ExtractorPro is an email harvester, can be annoying and use bandwidth, but nothing to be too worried about. For ping, trace route, and all, in one handy, easy to use package, check out NeoTrace at [neoworx.com...]

When calculating KW density there are a couple things to keep in mind. There are many different ways to calculate it, not any one "right way."
The numbers are guidelines, not absolutes. The optimum values vary from SE to SE and even seem to vary for different keywords on the same SE.

Welcome, JonB.

I'll try to address some of your questions:

1) naming of pages
-------------------
You need to think about that before you submit to SEs. Once the page is in their index, the robots will combe back regularly, and check for changes. I personally did as follows:

Main dir contains all html files
/img contains all images (jpg files)

most importantly, my main page is named index.html, and is the default page to load when on other page is given. I usually only submit that page to SEs, since it contains links to all other pages.

2) page optimisation
--------------------

It is true that the different Se use diffferent algos to rank the pages, and that your pages can be optimised for one Se or the other. This is usually done in the following way:

a) good selection of keywords in the META keywords entry in the header of the page. Dont do keyword spamming, usually 5-10 words are enough.

b) don't use frames, some robots can't cope with them.

c) keep your pages small (and fast). All my pages load in considerably less than 10 seconds. I use graphics very cautiously, and only optimised graphics.

3) no idea

4) I konw I repeat myself (read my other posts). I personally find analog quite a good tool to analyse logfiles. Your milage may vary, though.

The analog page is at [analog.cx...] .it's available for all major platforms, and in the public domain (gpl license)

5) that looks like a robot to me. dont worry about those they usually mean you'll be included in some index of sorts, you should see it by the referrals. Also in the beginning the traffic volume from robots is quite high.

Dont worry that you have the ip numbers inyour logfiles. Some ip's just dont resolve, for various reasons:

a) some countries don't resolve some ips for political reasons (iran, vietnam, china,..)

b) some isps have dialup ips they dont reslove.

etc. nothing particular to worry about.

and a tip at the end:

I found it useful to include a feeedback form in my pages. IUt does nothing more than generate an email sent to me, but it allows ppl that are interested to contact me easily. Ofc, my company address, phone and fax numbers, and email is listed on my main page. Still i found that ppl rather use the web form to send me a mail then to send a fax, which is much more ocst intensive.

Another useful thing is a full text search.

well, just my 0.02 USD

Pozdravljeni to WebmasterWorld, Jon! If you want to learn about search engines, you have certainly come to the right place and I hope you will like it. I think you are our first Slovenian member and if you have a minute, perhaps you could tell us a little about search engines in your country. You will find the discussion on Slovenia right here [webmasterworld.com].

Actually, I spent this morning reading a huge newspaper article about your country, which I understand is the frontrunner for speedy membership in the European Union. I also learned that it borders on Austria, Italy, Hungaria and Croatia. One more thing: There is an unwritten rule here never to apologize for your English. The reason is that we Europeans do not want to embarrass all the Americans, who can't spell their own language ;)

As to your questions, here is what I can contribute:

1. Use fresh names as drbill suggests AND see if you can put a keyword in there. It will help rankings in a few engines (not many though) plus it is easy for you to remember the filenames.

2. Optimizing pages for specific engines is an advanced and difficult technique used mainly in very competitive fields. You didn't put your homepage into your profile, so I can't tell you how important this may be for you. If you don't want to post it in the profile, perhaps you can send it to me by Sticky Mail and I'll have a look.

If you are new to this, you may want to see how far you can go with just basic stuff (oftentimes a surprisingly long way). Here are two excellent discussions for beginners in case you have not already found them: One size fits all SEO [webmasterworld.com] and THOU shalt NOT [webmasterworld.com]

3. There is a free Keyword density analyzer at SearchEngineWorld. If you want something more advanced there is one as part of the WebPosition Gold program. And many, many others.

I will leave your questions 4 and 5 to my learned friends, now arriving here in droves I see.

VisualRoute is a VERY VERY good program for doing a tracert. It will even display a map of where the IP is located. Then you can click on each node to find out who owns what along the way.

Visual Route [visualroute.com]

There is also a great all-in-one program called Genius from Indiesoft. You can perform pings, traceroutes, whois, and even check the weather. There are tons of useful tools in this program.

Genius Download page [indiesoft.com]
