Linking to your own site - BAD OR GOOD

Hi,

I have one website (content only) which is high traffic (40k unique a day) and very well indexed on both Google and Yahoo. I was thinking adding links to my rest of sites at the bottom or sidebar from each and every page (over 3000+ pages).

My question is:
Is this allowed....? Or google/yahoo/msn going to penalize for linking my own site?

All sites are hosted on same server but with different IP address such as 71.1.2.3 to 71.1.2.8 total 6 sites.

I'd really appreciate someone though out some light regarding my own link.

TIA.

Would the link add value to the pages? Is it relevant?

If not I would not do it.

Those would be referred to as Sitewide Links and are possibly discounted in the overall scheme of things.

I'd look at the relevancy factor. As mentioned above, would the link add value? If so, then by all means link to the other sites. Do those links have to be sitewide? Could they be more targeted and only appear when appropriate?

If you are looking at it as a way to influence the inbound links of the main site, then don't do it. As soon as that method of thinking comes into play, you usually get yourself in trouble later down the line.

Do you have an about us page that is linked to from the main navigation? If so, link to the other properties from that page, it will have more value from a linking perspective. Be sure to provide short descriptions for each of the properties along with a logo and a title that links to the site.

would the link add value?

No. These are totally different web sites (different subjects). Thanks for pointing out importance of related pages/information.

Yes I was thinking a way to influence the inbound links. As you suggested I will add all other my sites links to only home page and about us page. :D

As you suggested I will add all other my sites links to only home page and about us page.

I might keep them off the home page for now. Start with the about us page and then work from there. If they are unrelated, having them on the home page might present some issues. Because they are on the same IP is what concerns me especially with Google and their methods for detecting link manipulation. ;)

P.S. These are just my concerns. I'm a bit on the conservative side when it comes to outbound links and linking between properties on the same IP range and under the same ownership.

Good advice :)

Google seems to be quite progressive detecting this kind of things. It is a good idea not to manipulate factors. I hope in long run it will help me out.

Thanks.

I share pageone's conservatism in this area. I would avoid linking the sites together if at all possible.

If the sites are unrelated in subject matter, you will have one set of problems. If they are related in subject matter, you will have another.

If you are having trouble getting inbound links for these sites and would like to link them for SEO purposes, then you truly will be courting trouble. The degree of linking you're talking about certainly will raise some flags at all the engines... but I wouldn't even do the "About" page links.
