i wan to change my folders names from "folder_names to folder-names" is this ok, search engines wise which is better?

Don't CHANGE them, unless your listings and traffic is pants... Otherwise you will lose all your existing listings.
If you do want to be so rash, then first change your error 404 page to something useful for all those visitors who arrive at a page that no longer exists.

thats ok im redirecting them to my newer pages...:) so there is no problem going from folder_names to folder-names right?

This is just my opinion, but I always tend to use "my_folder" simply because if it was to be used as a link the bottom"_" tends to be part of the link underline.
